http://www.usapl.org/2004/news/GreenRecord.html http://www.usapl.org/2004/news/GreenDay1.html Footnote from the caddie: I met Danny Green the year before the U.S. Publinks at a Trans-Mississippi Championship. Danny had a reputation of being tough on those who caddie for him. The caddie assigned to him for the U.S. Publinks resigned after a practice round. Danny knew I caddied and lived in the area and asked me to loop for him. Danny's a great player. On the first hole of qualifying, he had about a 30-footer. Danny had a good idea how it was going to break but told me he was going to test me. I gave him the read and he rolled it in center-cut. On No. 2, he was pin high about 10-yards off the green in two on the par 5. He again asked for my thoughts. I told him to go right at it - that it will funnel from both sides to the cup. He chipped in for eagle and then told the USGA official by the green that "my caddie told me it would funnel in there so I thought I'd chip it in." He shot 30 on the front, 63 for the day and followed with a 68 the next day in very windy conditions. On the 36th and last hole of qualifying, No. 9 at Rush Creek, Danny was about 150 to the pin. We knew where he stood regarding medalist honors. He needed three. Danny knew the stats and kept telling me that a lot of #1s get upset in the first round and seriously considered going for the middle of the green in hopes to get the #2 seed. Danny was leaning toward an 8-iron. He asked me what I thought and I told him to go for the pin with a nine and be medalist. He hit the nine stiff, made birdie...and we made USGA history. - Jeff Turtinen Best Loop for a Pro: Tim Herron Spring Hill Golf Club 35-32--67 Left putt on the lip on #18 to tie course record (at that time). 10 pars, 7 birdies and a double on #9 - Jeff Turtinen Best Call as a Caddie: I was caddying for an 81-year-old gentleman named Miller Myers. He was the founder of Dairy Queen International. We were playing with Walter Bush, an original owner of the Minnesota North Stars. Well, Mr. Myers was a lefty. He had a sweet swing and had his game pretty much dialed in one day at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, MN. On this beautiful summer afternoon we approached the 17th tee, a short par 3 measuring about 140 yards. We decided on his club. He stood over the ball and began his waggle. I then interjected and said: "If you want to put it in the hole, hit it about 5 feet right of the cup." As I told you earlier, he had things dialed in. He put the ball about five feet right of the pin, it took a left turn and rolled into the cup for a hole-in-one. - Jeff Turtinen |
